LED-YC traps were used to control the number of pest insects in poinsettia greenhouses. While LED-YC traps did not attract beneficial insects, they did trap a significant number of rove beetles. However, additional studies are needed to determine the exact impact of LED-YC traps on pest populations. Insects captured in this study were less than one-third of the original number.
A new study has found that adult greenhouse whiteflies were most attracted to a UV-green LED complex, while the majority of previous cage studies used green and UV LEDs. Although green and UV LEDs have the most sensitive light receptors, they are not the only wavelengths a pest can respond to. The integrated visual stimuli inputs create a peculiar phototactic response that is influenced by a number of factors, including light intensity, contrast between light source intensity, and state of the insects.
